Building It Eco

http://www.dwell.com/articles/this-is-it.html

I am intrigued by this environmentally efficient home, designed by Alterstudio Architects in Austin, Texas. When building this home the Alterstudio Architects installed many floor-to-ceiling windows. This allows the homeowners to save on electricity costs and is a way to naturally ventilate their home. Homes like this speak great volumes in the modern world. It’s the ability to find alternative solutions to create a better environment that should be always taken into consideration. With solar panels on the roof and salvaged wood floors from an old barn. This home not only is better for the environment, but also saves the homeowners money. The home has a great mix of vintage, modern and Eco design.

The Color Of October

1.  Templeton Apartment Sofa by Jonathan Adler
2. Boomerang Vintage 1960’s Desk by Maurice Calka
3. Canning Lattice Overlay Pillow by Dransfield & Ross
4. Funky Classic Cone Chair by Vintage Looks
5. Orange Ceramic Lamp 1970 by Benjamin Wilson

http://www.kellywearstler.com/

The color orange is one of my favorites. It’s bright, filled with energy and the color of October. As you take your kids out tonight and fill their trick or treat bags as well as yours, take note of some colorful inspiration. Bring any orange element into your home. Above, you'll find some of my favorite orange pieces.

1.  Absolutely, love the white base. Gives the sofa a fresh feel. 2How could you not love a desk with such curves? 3. It works with any space. Plus it reminds of pumpkins. 4. Stick it in a gothic mansion and it will still look awesome. 5. I'm in love with 1970's French vintage.

You can add as little or as much orange to your home as you want. Don’t follow rules, just do.

Lighting Is The Key To Creating A Perfect Room

http://lookbook.elledecor.com/Dining-Room-Eclectic-Going-for-Baroque/id209

http://www.kellywearstler.com/

Often times we assume that as long as the art, furniture, and layout of a room is well thought out, than our rooms will be glamorous. That assumption is only half true. Lighting is the key to creating a perfect room. Beautiful furniture alone will not save your room. Buy a great chandelier or a fabulous lamp. I for one hate recessed lighting and fluorescent bulbs. Not only does recessed lighting and fluorescent bulbs strain your eyes, but they also make you look and feel tired. Lighting contributes to the overall success of a room. Be bold when buying lighting for your home. Don’t just choose some chandelier or some lamp. If your buying a lamp, mix up the shades. Buy an orange lamp shade on a lamp with a white base, or buy a turquoise lamp shade for a lamp that has a gold base. The biggest injustice you can commit when buying lighting is following trends and not taking risks. Every light you place in your home must be meticulously thought out. When using overhead lighting such as a chandelier or pendant be sure to add a dimmer. Dimmers create different moods depending on the time of day, plus they are a great energy saver. Each light should speak for itself, but work collectively. You can add as little or as much lighting to your home as you want. Don’t follow rules, just do.

Entry Vestibule’s Are My Favorite

http://www.architecturaldigest.com/architects/features/2011/03/in_her_fashion_slideshow#slide=1

The first room one sees when entering your home is the entry vestibule. Make it pop. Don’t make your entry vestibule just a hallway. Add a rug, a table and some great lighting. When guests visit you, they will be amazed by your home just a couple steps in. Entry vestibule’s are my favorite, because unlike living rooms which require a sofa or a dining room which requires a table, entry vestibules can have anything. Try adding mirror to your entry vestibule, especially on the ceiling. Glass will make a usually small space feel bigger. If you want to paint the ceiling a dark color feel free to. Painting a ceiling a dark color will visually heighten the ceiling. One home I visited had a green striped ceiling in the entry vestibule. If you have more space in your entry vestibule add a couple chairs. Flowers and unique pottery will give your entry vestibule a more eclectic feel. The key to designing a successful entry vestibule is adding what you love. You can add as little or as much to your entry vestibule as you want. Don’t follow rules, just do.

Own One Good Set Of Fine China

http://www.kellywearstler.com/collaborations.html

http://www.kellywearstler.com/pickard.html
Whether your hosting a formal event or eating dinner as a family dishes are being used. While some dishes are inexpensive and more often used, others are fine china. Don’t be the guy or girl who always whips out the plastic. Own one good set of fine china. I have been to my fair share of family Christmas parties where the only china being used was Chinet. Not only is china the only dinnerware for formal occasions, but it’s also a wonderful piece of art. Invest in china that has meaning to you, and display it. Don’t just look for the cheapest china you can find. Whether you inherit it from grandma or purchase it from Bergdorf Goodman make sure it’s something you can pass down. When on your hunt for china don’t let trends or your interior decor determine the color or style. Lastly, when setting up your table don’t feel as though you can’t mix and match china from different sets. If the colors create a story then use them. You can buy as little or as much China as you want. Don’t follow rules, just do.

The Heart Of The Kitchen

http://lookbook.elledecor.com/search/room-Dining-Room

http://lookbook.elledecor.com/search/room-Dining-Room
Memories are made, laughter is heard. The breakfast nook right off the kitchen, is a place where you’ll gather with your family and friends. Why not make the breakfast nook the heart of the kitchen? Now think, is your heart going to be hard like an old wood four legged chair? Or is it going to be soft and lush like a sofa? When designing your breakfast nook, put to rest the standard table and four bland chairs. Add a sofa to your breakfast nook, don’t worry if it looks like it belongs in a living room. A sofa is a great way to bring people around the table, and add texture to a defined space, such as a kitchen. In addition, a sofa can possess much needed glamour. Choose a table that is round. A round table enhances conversation. Finally, add a great rug, pillows, and some color. The breakfast nook is the perfect escape from the upright, formal feel of a dining room. You can add as little or as much to your breakfast nook as you want. Don’t follow rules, just do.

Every space needs a table. Whether you own an apartment or a mansion the need for a solid table is crucial. A dining room table brings together the one’s you love. A side table houses your goods and displays your lamps. A coffee table allows your TV dinner to have a place to rest, and your books a place to display. Invest in one good table. Whether or not you use it, it is always good to have one. Table’s serve an obvious function, however, they should also have a creative form. Take a look at some of our favorites. You can add as little or as many table’s to your space as you want. Don’t follow rules, just do.

Bare Walls Are Overrated

http://www.elledecor.com/image/tid/6468?pause=0&page=2

http://www.jonathanadler.com/interior_design.php
Bare walls are overrated. Give your walls a life, let them breathe, add a painting. Paintings are a great way to add personality into a room. Paintings evoke emotion, as well as discussion. By placing a fantastic painting on your walls you’ll have given your room a conversation piece. Don’t worry about only placing abstract paintings in a modern space or oil paintings in a traditional space. Mix and match. The best rooms are the ones that can change the way we view art. Going to an antique store or flee market is one of the best ways to score a great piece of art at a great price. If a painting that you fall in love with is in a crap frame don’t worry. You can always have it reframed. Try placing a contemporary frame on a traditional painting (Van Gogh, De Vinci) and a traditional frame on an abstract/cubist painting (Picasso, Dali). You can add as little or as many paintings to your walls as you want. Don’t follow rules, just do.

Your Walls Are Your Canvas

http://lookbook.elledecor.com/Dining-Room-Eclectic-Design-Solutions:-A-Brighter-Beach-House/id2366

http://www.kellywearstler.com/hillcrestestate.html
With so many ways to decorate your home, people often resort to painting their walls a boring color. Your Walls Are Your CanvasWhite, Beige and Gray can look equally attractive and glamorous however, done wrong these colors can create a design catastrophe. Try adding flavor to your walls. Paint is always a great inexpensive option. If you want to give your walls a little more oomph add a pattern. You can achieve a pattern by applying wallpaper, or by placing tape in which ever way you choose on your walls. Paint in between the tape. Wall molding’s are brilliant ways to divide color, add a molding and paint one room multiple colors from the same color family. You can add as little or as much to your walls as you want. Don’t follow rules, just do.

Look up, sitting!

 http://www.kellywearstler.com/bgatbergdorfgoodman.html

Ever wish you could find a chair that made you feel warm and cozy? A chair that made made you feel strong and powerful? A chair that has many names...Canopy chair, Ballon chair, Porter chair. Ever since I spotted this chair in a magazine I have called it my only love. Its tall figure and enclosed back causes you to Look up, sitting! The Canopy chair is the perfect chair to add to any type of space. During medieval England, the chair was placed by the front door of a home for use by a servant who was in charge of welcoming visitors. The Canopy chair can have many colors and styles, so if you want to reupholster it in leather, suede or velvet you can. It’s a chair that can be used in a modern home, a restaurant, or traditional space. In addition, the Canopy chair is a great buy as it skews ones idea of proportion. You can add as little or as much to your Canopy Chair as you want. Don’t follow rules, just do.

Why Red?

http://www.kellywearstler.com/thetidessouthbeach.html
Most people are nervous when it comes to panting a room red. A red room is a power statement and should not be underestimated. So...why red? Red increases your enthusiasm, it encourages you to take action and be confident and it provides you with a sense of protection from fears and anxiety. The color red does not need to be applied to all four walls of a room, but rather can be applied as an accent color. Change up the way you apply the color red to your room. Buy red pillows with lots of texture, add red stripes to your walls going in different directions, even pant the ceiling or floor red. You can add as little or as much red to your room as you want. Don’t follow rules, just do.

Energize Your Ceiling

http://www.architecturaldigest.com/homes/features/2011/10/home-libraries-slideshow#slide=5
Look up. It’s your ceiling, a wide open canvas ready to be painted on. Ceiling’s are the most unused spaces in a room. Usually panted an ugly hue of white, ceilings are left to fend for themselves. Energize Your Ceiling. Give it life, pant it red, add stripes, give it texture. When you walk into a room one of the first places your eye is drawn to is your ceiling. The ceiling is the perfect place to display your creativity. You can add as little or as much to your ceiling as you want. Don’t follow rules, just do.
